HOST STUDIO / SUPPORT
Let’s get you
connected.
Setup guidance and troubleshooting for your 3270 and 5250 terminal on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro.
Start with your host details.
Ask your mainframe administrator for the hostname, port, required network or VPN, TLS requirements, terminal model, and any LU name needed for your environment.
- Open Connect to Host and enter the connection details supplied by your administrator.
- Match the TLS, terminal model, and TN3270E settings to your host requirements.
- Connect, then follow your host’s sign-in prompts.
- Save the connection in Host Bookmarks when you want to return to it.
Use the app’s demo mode to explore the interface before connecting to your own host.
MDM / APPCONFIG
Enterprise MDM Managed App Configuration
Enterprise IT administrators can deliver remote configuration payloads via Jamf Pro, Microsoft Intune, VMware Workspace ONE, or MobileIron.
Supported Managed Configuration Keys
| Key | Type | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
DefaultHostName | String | "" | Enterprise default mainframe host IP or FQDN |
DefaultHostPort | String | "992" | Enterprise default port |
RequireTLS | Boolean | true | Enforces TLS for all outbound connections |
EnforceTLS13 | Boolean | false | Mandates TLS 1.3 minimum handshake |
DisableDatasetExport | Boolean | false | Prevents downloading host datasets / PDF spool export |
LockConfiguration | Boolean | false | Prevents end-users from editing or deleting deployed profiles |
ManagedProfiles | Array | [] | Array of pre-configured corporate host dictionaries |
Sample MDM Configuration Dictionary (Apple Plist / Jamf XML)
Replace the example hostnames with your organization’s hosts before deployment. Configuration keys and protocol values are the same in every language.

Where can I find the 5250 host print queue?
Open the Spool tab to see jobs captured by the virtual SCS printer. View All Spool Jobs opens the complete list with report names, printer IDs, page counts, and timestamps. Select a job to preview its PDF, then use the share or print controls. If no jobs appear, confirm with your administrator that the host is sending SCS output to the configured virtual printer.
What does TN5250E add for IBM i?
TN5250E includes RFC 4777 enhancements, auto bypass sign-on, and associated printer binding. IBM i screens support subfile grids such as WRKACTJOB and dotted prompts presented as native forms.
Should I choose 3270 or 5250?
Choose TN3270 or TN3270E for IBM mainframes such as z/OS, z/VM, and z/VSE. Choose TN5250 or TN5250E for IBM i (AS/400). Ask your administrator for the correct protocol, port, terminal model, LU name or Workstation ID, and TLS requirements.
How do I use the virtual 5250 printer?
The virtual SCS printer is a companion printer session for IBM i. Confirm the required printer configuration and access with your administrator, then use the spool workbench to inspect captured jobs and export paginated PDFs. Printing uses AirPrint or macOS CUPS where available. IND$FILE is a separate mainframe dataset-transfer feature.
What does native GUI mode do?
Switch from CRT view to native UI mode to display recognized host fields as forms, cards, and contextual actions. Parsing is subsystem-aware. If a screen is unfamiliar or an action is unclear, return to CRT view and confirm the original host prompts before continuing.
How should I use macros and the scanner?
Test auto-logon scripts against a non-production host first. WAIT, SEND, ENTER, TAB, DELAY, and PF commands can affect your live session. Before scanning a barcode or QR code, check the active input field and review the captured value.
Can I try Host Studio without a network connection?
Yes. Built-in offline demos let you explore 3270 and 5250 sessions, native UI conversion, themes, and navigation without a host connection.
Common questions
Why can’t I connect?
Check the hostname and port, confirm that any required VPN is connected, and verify that the host is reachable from your network. Your administrator can confirm whether terminal access is enabled for your account and device.
What if I see a certificate or TLS error?
Confirm the host’s TLS requirements and certificate configuration with your administrator. Keep certificate verification enabled; only configure a custom certificate authority when your administrator provides the correct certificate and instructions.
Where are the function keys?
Open the keypad panel to access terminal controls, including PF keys. The panel layout varies by device and available screen space.
How do I change the terminal appearance?
Open the display or theme controls and choose a terminal theme. The supplied screenshots show options including Green Phosphor, Amber Phosphor, and IBM 3270 Color.
Why is an IND$FILE transfer failing?
Confirm that your host supports IND$FILE and that your session is in the correct host environment. Check transfer direction, dataset or file name, transfer mode, and record settings with your administrator. A local demo does not confirm that a transfer to your host will succeed.
What should I include in a support request?
Include your device, OS version, Host Studio version, the steps that led to the issue, and the exact error message. Remove passwords, host credentials, account data, and sensitive terminal content from any screenshots or logs you share.
